Floating Welcomes Pediatric Gastroenterologist Emilia Shin, MD

05/22/2017

Dr. Emilia Shin joined Floating Hospital’s Division of Gastroenterology and Nutrition in March. We recently sat down with Dr. Shin to learn a little more about her background and what drew her to the field of gastroenterology.

Please share with us your background.

Dr. Shin: I grew up in Southern California and then moved to South Korea at age 16 where I went to medical school and lived for more than 10 years. I returned to the United States for a pediatric residency at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn. I then moved to Baltimore to do a fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital where I had the pleasure of training in pediatric GI.

What drew you to gastroenterology?

Dr. Shin: I found out during residency that I like doing procedures and I also wanted to specialize. I feel that GI is a very important part of pediatrics; it involves nutrition, which is key to a child’s health, and abdominal pain is a very common complaint spanning the whole pediatric age range. During fellowship, I met my research mentor and discovered that I especially liked working with liver disease patients and my research also happened to be on autoimmune hepatitis.

Why did you join Floating Hospital?

Dr. Shin: I really appreciate the collegial and friendly environment. Plus, I heard a lot of amazing reviews about the GI group.

How do you communicate with referring pediatricians?

Dr. Shin: I will fax them my encounter note, but if there are more concerning issues that need discussion, I will call them as well.

What do you do when you aren’t working?

Dr. Shin: I like to spend time with my two-year-old son and husband, whether it's spending time outdoors in the park, strolling about in the city, or going to museums. I also enjoy shopping, as well as a quiet cup of tea when I get a rare moment alone.
